Why choose Property in Megève?

Tuesday, December 29th, 2009

Megève has long been known as the French High Society’s number one destination for ski holidaying in the Alps. With its chick boutiques, Michelin star restaurants and luxury accommodation, it is no wander that the majority of top dogs in the French corporate world own property in Megève. But what exactly is it that earns Megève its place at the top of the luxury ski destinations? How does it compare to the Courchevel’s and Davos’s of this world?

Megève is ideally situated just over an hours drive from Geneva airport making it refreshingly easily accessible. Set in the open Arly Valley it boast of one of the highest sun exposures of many of the Haute Savoie ski resorts and at 1100m in altitude it traps the sun perfectly. The village is made up of a maze of cobbled boutique laden streets that lead to the central church square, where open air shows and presentations regularly take place. Cafes and terraced restaurants bring the town to life during the busy winter and summer seasons- and horse drawn sleighs or chariots replace the taxis in this picturesque mountain resort.

The efficient lift system whooshes you up to the mellow tree lined slopes above Megève town. Perfect for families, the terrain is gentle and there is no shortage of gourmet mountain restaurants. For those looking for more of an adrenaline boost, its worth hiring a guide and hiking some of the ridge lines around the peak of Mont Joly- unforgettable lines.

Property prices are high in Megève but it simply takes a walk down the high street to realise what it is you are paying for. All the amenities of a normal ski resort are readily available but there is a charm, a class, a ‘je ne sait quoi’, that makes Megève truly luxury.

Christmas in Morzine

Monday, December 21st, 2009

The winter season in Morzine kicks off this week in earnest with snow bucketing down and the weekly Monday evening welcome drinks starting tonight. Last Saturday night Morzine Village saw the arrival of the Frosted Fruits. Sadly this wasn’t a confectionary based event but a large group of adults dressed as life sized yellow and red raisins, watermelons, pineapples and a couple of shy strawberries. Their tag line is that they are they only dessert in the world to play trumpet, saxophone, banjo, base tuba and percussion. I think they are probably right. The giant Frosted Fruits played a selection of New Orleans, reggae, Latin jazz, nursery rhymes and funk in the streets of the village from 5.30pm. But don’t feel sad if you think you have missed out, Disco Power Band, a burlesque musical show will be roaming the streets on Monday night playing seventies music from Staying Alive and Hot Stuff to YMCA. Apparently their breathtaking dancing and singing make other bands jealous, as does their costumes and sequins. If I’d known someone would be wearing sequins I would have stayed in town. Morzine is officially the musical hub of the world as well as being the most incredible ski resort.

Christmas in Chamonix.

The fun begins – season 2010 – Chamonix

Winter has hit- and it is cold! Luckily the sub zero temperatures don’t seem to be holding back the chalet shoppers and viewings in the Alps seem to be on the increase. There is a fantastic selection of dream chalets and apartments available this Christmas, partly due to a fairly quiet year on the property market. Though house prices do not seem to have conspicuously dropped on paper in the Chamonix valley, owners are seemingly much more open to negotiation. So with great choices, flexible prices and a merry Christmas vibe these next few weeks are a prime time to combine some property viewing with a short alpine break.

The lifts at the Grand Montet opened a couple of weeks ago. This high and north facing ski resort does a great job at holding the snow and with a fresh supply delivered last Saturday conditions are pretty good. I had the pleasure of getting out for a couple of hours on Sunday morning, and though still a little rocky off the piste, we gave our legs a good wake up call on the runs.

The season will truly kick off on Saturday the 19th with the opening of the rest of the valley resorts. Le Tour at the head of the valley has been ski able for a while now but only for those willing to slog up to the top the original way. Chamonix is a true mecca for ski touring where synthetic seal skins are stuck on the base of your skis so that you can walk up hill. The sunny south facing resorts of Flegere and Brevent will also open this weekend- to cater for the hoards of skiers who will descend on the valley this weekend. Luckily for the businesses in the valley it appears that skiing is the last to go on the list of cut backs during this financially tough time.

With the beginning of the season comes a plethora of cultural, artistic and sporting events to get the valley in the festive mood. The local cinema is hosting a ‘rustic burlesque fantasy show’ on Friday the 18th for the children and later at the Podium Bar the ‘Winter seasons’ will delivering hip hop and techno beats for the next generation! On Saturday the 19th the weekly market will be offering seasonal goods and fantastic Christmas present ideas. On Sunday the 19th the Argentière Tourist office are having an open day for all those interested in finding out what is on offer in the village this winter. On Tuesday the 22nd there will be a presentation of the newly published and inspiring Frison – Roche book at the Majestic in Chamonix centre. Then there will be Christmas shows and Santa Claus arrival parties on the town square on Wednesday and Thursday. Oh and don’t miss the beautiful Chamonix Christmas market which will be running all week.

As you can see, there is plenty going on during the festive period, so please feel free to contact us if you would like to combine some alpine property viewing in the Chamonix valley with a true winter wonderland experience.
