| Les Gets introduces a new event to the summer calendar this year with the Festival des Quatre Eléments (Festival of the Four Elements).
From 28th July to 2nd August the resort will host a range of entertainments and workshops based around the themes of water, air, earth and fire. During the festival there will be story-telling, exhibitions, fire jugglers, giant inflatables, kite flying, parades and more. Workshops will include making thermal windmills, rockets, gliders and other naturally-powered devices. Experts will tell you all about the medicinal properties of local plants and you will be invited to taste herbs and mountain flowers. If that’s not enough excitement, how about a foam party with live DJ and a concert by Legends of Rock followed by a firework display. Everything is free entry and will be happening in and around the centre of Les Gets, call into the Tourist Office for further details. |

New festival in Les Gets
Tuesday, August 2nd, 2011Learn to sail in Châtel – July & August
Friday, May 27th, 2011
In July and August this year the village of Châtel will be holding sailing lessons on the lake. While it initially took us a moment to get our heads around leaning to sail in the French Alps, in a ski resort, sailing is just one of hundreds of wonderful sporting activities on offer in the mountains. This particular introduction to sailing is specifically aimed at children between the ages of 5 – 12 and they have boats specially designed with teaching in mind. The setting is absolutely stunning so you could enjoy a wonderful picnic or walk while your kids master the basics of sailing, adding another string to their sporting bow, or perhaps we should say, more wind to their sails! The French Alps in Summer 2011
Monday, May 16th, 2011The Alps really aren’t just for winter. A whole host of activities and events take place throughout the summer. Here are some of Alpine Angels top tips for summer 2011.
Pass’Portes du Soleil 2011 (24 – 26 June)
This is a mountain biking weekend across the enormous and beautiful Portes du Soleil. Mountain bikers of all abilities cross the mountain biking tracks of the Portes du Soleil crossing Avoriaz, Châtel, Les Gets, Morzine, Montriond-Les Lindarets, Champéry, Morgins, Torgon and Les Crosets. The trek covers a total of 80km and each resort offers refreshments with local produce and music. There is also a special kids circuit so the whole family can get involved. You can start from any of the resorts involved. The trek takes just one day so you can enter either on the Saturday or Sunday (or both if you’re a bit keen!)

The World Climbing Championships 2011 (11 – 13 July)
Every year Chamonix plays host to the World Climbing Championships (Coupe du Monde d’Escalade). The best speed and technical climbers from around the globe descend on the resort for three days of astonishing climbing action. It is well worth a trip to watch climbers race up 15 meter walks, scaling overhangs that look impassible. There are also climbing demonstrations and live music. The finals take place on 13 July so you can enjoy the incredible “Bastille Day” fireworks with bars open until the last person leaves.

Cham’Biere Fest (13 July)
For those of you a little less sport focused, this is an annual Chamonix outdoor festival that celebrates beer. All the beers have been brewed by independent breweries in the Rhone-Alpes Region including traditionally brewed ales and lagers, fruit beers, and even some spiced beers. There are up to 10 breweries present with over 35 different beers in all. There is food and live music, a giant BBQ, and a live band. Cham-biere is always held on the last day of the World Climbing Championships (see above) and so you have the added bonus of being able to watch the amazing Bastille Day fireworks in the evening.
There is more information available at Cham-Biere

The 98th Tour de France (2nd – 24th July)
Every summer France is gripped by the biggest and best cycle race in Europe – Le Tour de France. Last year Morzine – Avoriaz played host to not one but two of the stages of this famous race. In fact the French Alps have featured heavily in Le Tour’s history with the grueling mountain climbs creating some of the most exciting and dramatic racing moments of the last 98 years. The route changes each year taking in different towns and villages along the way and this year it ends in Paris. But even if the race doesn’t pass near you this summer it will be avidly followed in all the bars and cafés around the French Alps – A real moment in French culture – http://www.letour.fr

Status Quo Free Festival / Harley Davidson Owners Annual Meet (15 – 17July)
This is without question one of the highlights of Alpine Angels’ summer 2011. Harley Davidson club members descend upon Morzine in July to coo over each others bikes, watch and take part in motor bike demonstrations and generally make an awful lot of noise with their big Harley Davidson bikes. The event itself is quite something, but this year one of the live acts they have arranged is none other than The Quo! Status Quo have been rocking all over the world, or at least all over Europe on a mega sold out tour. But they have chosen to perform a free concert as part of the Harley Davidson weekend in Morzine-Avoriaz. We have been practicing our air guitar ever since we found out.

Châtel: Neiges Etoilées – an International Catering Festival
Friday, February 18th, 2011
The ski resort of Châtel is hosting an incredible catering festival from 28th January to 30th January 2011. In fact, to say that “Neiges étoilées” is just a catering festival seems somehow unfair. The main theme of the weekend is a big cooking challenge that will occur on Saturday 29th at the bottom of Châtel’s incredible ski area. Twelve chefs from the Portes du Soleil ski area, one per resort, will be taking part preparing a meal in front of a live audience using two of the local area’s main produces; that of Abondance Cheese and Fera (fish) from Geneva’s lake.
But over the course of the weekend there are also workshops for children (including a soup competition where kids have the opportunity to judge soups prepared by a selection of chefs); a blind tasting; a photographic course teaching people how to take great pictures of their dishes; a treasure hunt where children can win their age in chocolate and even a special breakfast on Sunday morning on top of the slopes. It really is a ‘jam-packed’ weekend and a credit to Châtel for organising such a fabulous event. For more information on the event or on Châtel in general click here

Airline Update
Tuesday, November 23rd, 2010Easyjet are accepting bookings, Fly Baboo is not, BA sometimes don’t fly at all. These days it’s hard to know which airline is flying where.
This winter one of the newest airlines to start flying mountain lovers to the French Alps is budget airline www.Jet2.com. They have recently announced they are releasing more weekend flights from Leeds Bradford Airport starting from January 8th 2011. Two flights a day will be taking off on Saturdays and Sundays for Geneva Airport, leaving you no reason to avoid the pistes this coming winter season.
Geneva Airport is the most convenient airport for accessing the French Alps, with Chamonix, Les Gets, Morzine and Chatel just over one hour away by car. In fact it’s so convenient that we have found homes for a variety of different people who commute back to London to work during the week. They take the 7am Geneva flight back to London on Monday mornings and come Friday they take a Geneva bound flight back to the Alps, having Vin Chaud by 10pm and skiing Saturday morning. The Alps are more than ever an accessible place to live and work.
To book a flight check out www.skycanner.net. Most of the airlines list flights.

The mystery price tag attached to the disappearing Red Gondolas: Les Gets invests €4.5M on a new gondola lift
Tuesday, October 12th, 2010In the ski resort of Les Gets a new gondola is being installed ready for this coming ski season. It’s exciting news for the region which forms part of the massive Portes du Soleil ski area. The new Gondola will transport more passengers, more quickly, and in super modern luxury style. And those poor beginner skiers, who always have a tough time getting up the mountain, down the mountain, around the mountain, will also benefit, as there will no longer be a difference in floor level between the gondola cabin and the ground. Who wants to step up in a heavy ski boot?
The redevelopment continues further up the Les Gets slopes. The departure point for the Boule de Gomme draglift (the first ever automatic release draglift installed in France in 1936) will be repositioned; the slopes that lead down into the village are being remodeled to make the decent more user-friendly; a six-man chair is being built in the Chamossiere area reducing the journey time to the summit to around 5 minutes; and a new boarder-cross is being created on Mont-Chéry in honour of local heroine Déborah Anthonioz who won silver at the 2010 Olympic games.
But it seems some people are a little sad about these changes, or more specifically, about the loss of their favourite retro-style red gondola lifts. The lifts have been put up for sale which is commonplace when ski lifts are replaced. What is not common place is the price tag attached to them. Each individual red gondola is now commanding an asking price of €3000. And even if you invest in one of these lovely red pods you are not actually allowed to put it on display. You have to keep it in your house. Les Gets has forbidden anyone from buying the red gondola pods if they intend to display them in public, i.e., (in your garden, in a pub or restaurant). So if you decide to buy one it will be a very expensive purchase and a very private one too!
Les Gets ski resort reopens on December 18th 2010. For a look at our current selection of property available to buy in Les Gets follow the link – http://alpineangels.net
