The fun begins – season 2010 – Chamonix
Winter has hit- and it is cold! Luckily the sub zero temperatures don’t seem to be holding back the chalet shoppers and viewings in the Alps seem to be on the increase. There is a fantastic selection of dream chalets and apartments available this Christmas, partly due to a fairly quiet year on the property market. Though house prices do not seem to have conspicuously dropped on paper in the Chamonix valley, owners are seemingly much more open to negotiation. So with great choices, flexible prices and a merry Christmas vibe these next few weeks are a prime time to combine some property viewing with a short alpine break.
The lifts at the Grand Montet opened a couple of weeks ago. This high and north facing ski resort does a great job at holding the snow and with a fresh supply delivered last Saturday conditions are pretty good. I had the pleasure of getting out for a couple of hours on Sunday morning, and though still a little rocky off the piste, we gave our legs a good wake up call on the runs.
The season will truly kick off on Saturday the 19th with the opening of the rest of the valley resorts. Le Tour at the head of the valley has been ski able for a while now but only for those willing to slog up to the top the original way. Chamonix is a true mecca for ski touring where synthetic seal skins are stuck on the base of your skis so that you can walk up hill. The sunny south facing resorts of Flegere and Brevent will also open this weekend- to cater for the hoards of skiers who will descend on the valley this weekend. Luckily for the businesses in the valley it appears that skiing is the last to go on the list of cut backs during this financially tough time.
With the beginning of the season comes a plethora of cultural, artistic and sporting events to get the valley in the festive mood. The local cinema is hosting a ‘rustic burlesque fantasy show’ on Friday the 18th for the children and later at the Podium Bar the ‘Winter seasons’ will delivering hip hop and techno beats for the next generation! On Saturday the 19th the weekly market will be offering seasonal goods and fantastic Christmas present ideas. On Sunday the 19th the Argentière Tourist office are having an open day for all those interested in finding out what is on offer in the village this winter. On Tuesday the 22nd there will be a presentation of the newly published and inspiring Frison – Roche book at the Majestic in Chamonix centre. Then there will be Christmas shows and Santa Claus arrival parties on the town square on Wednesday and Thursday. Oh and don’t miss the beautiful Chamonix Christmas market which will be running all week.
As you can see, there is plenty going on during the festive period, so please feel free to contact us if you would like to combine some alpine property viewing in the Chamonix valley with a true winter wonderland experience.
