Avoriaz news – The Trail des Hauts Forts
August 2010

Friday, September 17th, 2010

Avoriaz 1800, the famous mountain top resort in the heart of the Portes du Soleil, played host to the Trail des Hauts Forts in August. The Trail des Hauts Forts is an annual 42km cross country mountain race. The event, which offers runners the option of the 42km marathon or 21km half marathon, departs from Avoriaz and crosses the exquisite landscape of the famous Portes Du Soleil, the most expansive ski area in the world. Competitors in the half marathon have a 1200m ascent to conquer while the marathon runners climb nearly 3000m along mountain passes and on muddy tracks. This year’s event, the third of its kind, was another success with not one injury sustained by the hardy competitors.

Alpine Angels has being successfully finding properties to buy across the Portes du Soleil for many years. Click below to see a list of some rather fabulous apartments and chalets in Avoriaz itself.

Tour de France arrives in Avoriaz

Monday, July 12th, 2010

11th July – 13th July 2010 – Morzine

Team Radio Shack, Lance Armstrong’s cycling team, arrived in Morzine a few weeks ago to commence altitude training in preparation for the Tour de France. Lance Armstrong is famous for battling and beating testicular cancer and for winning the Tour de France a record-breaking seven consecutive years. However Lance got no preferential treatment from the local residents in the Portes du Soleil, with local cows blocking his route while he was out training. Perhaps they aren’t impressed by a seven time Tour winning superhero.

His cycling team, Team Radioshack, are undertaking a series of cycling events all across the world and The Tour de France is one of them. Morzine and Avoriaz have often been favourite stages for the cyclists who will be racing up from Station des Rousses into Morzine on Sunday 11th July. They then have one rest day before continuing on from Morzine town centre to Saint Jean de Maurinenne on Tuesday 13th July.

Avoriaz – Snow Carnival – 6 Feb – 6 Mar 2010 (annual)

Monday, February 8th, 2010

If you fancy a change from all the festivals of Morzine or Les Gets, Avoriaz also has its own 5-week long Snow Carnival. Every evening there are special après-ski activities include workshops for painting on wood, face-painting and shows for children. Once a week families can get together for the resort parade which climaxes with a fireworks display and Gluwein tasting (another favorite activity of mine).  The Snow Carnival is free entertainment for the whole family set against the backdrop of the French Alps. Thanks Avoriaz, that sounds great.

Avoriaz – Ripcurl Girls Weekend – 16 – 17th February

Saturday, February 6th, 2010

For girls, snowboards and girls that love snowboards Rip Curl has organised a Girls Tour which is back in Les Portes du Soleil again this season. There are freestyle snowboard and freeski lessons, demos and competitions. As well as qualified instructors the Rip Curl Team Pros will be on hand to offer top tips on style and technique. On the second day of the event there will be a ‘TRICKS ‘N’ FUN’ contest open to all snowboarding girls. There is also a whole bunch of Rip Curl snowboard and Mountain wear are up for grabs for the snowboard and ski winners respectively. Ripcurl have told me that everyone is welcome, whatever their skills, for beginners’ classes up to more advanced sessions. There will be DJ’s, lunch and a test of ski and snow equipment with Apo Snowboards so basically you will be busy all day. They finish up with the RIP CURL GIRLS TOUR PARTY (show of the day’s photos, fashion show, videos, and DJ’s) and I believe there are goodie bags. Definitely worth learning snowboarding for.
