Are you ARM less?

Friday, June 17th, 2011

The alpine town of Morzine is one of the most popular destinations in the French Alps. It offers hundreds of kilometers of high quality skiing and snowboarding; a picturesque village; friendly locals; and a summer full of sunshine, mountain biking, and hikes. It is for this reason that Morzine has become a home, or at least a second home, to so many people. But settling into a new community, especially if there is a language barrier, can be a challenge. So some clever second home owners set up ARM – The Association of Residents of Morzine. ARM consists of people who own second homes in Morzine (or in a nearby town) and has 4 simple aims and objectives:

  1. It wanted to enable residents to find each other, meet each other, and get to know each other.
  2. It wanted to actively participate in Morzine life
  3. It wanted to offer security and protect the interests of 2nd home owners
  4. It wanted to help keep people informed.

And ARM has successfully achieved all those things. It regularly organises activities and events for its members, such as tennis tournaments, golf days, walks, picnics, barbecues, and meals at Christmas and summer. ARM regularly meets with the Mayor and Town Council members to express their views on the management of the municipality and its choices for future development. ARM Residents pay exactly the same taxes as the local permanent residents so ARM works hard to try and ensure that its members enjoy the same benefits, such as local ski-lifts pass prices and discounts with various different businesses and sports facilities. ARM also publishes a quarterly newsletter to keep members up-to-date with Morzine life and the activity of the association. Pretty impressive stuff and definitely not something you want to keep at arms length!

Morzine’s White Week is back (31st Jan – 4th Feb)

Monday, January 24th, 2011

Morzine’s annual White Week is back again. As always the event celebrates mountain life by offering a range of activities and events that, while they are piste-focused, they are not all on piste. There are themed snowshoe walks in the mountains, mountain patrollers demonstrating rescue techniques and local mountain workers outlining their job and the part they play on the mountain. But there is also film screenings each evening, talks, discussions and storytelling encompassing an array of mountain themes from sport to traditions. This year the event it very much intertwined with Festiv’Alp Film Festival, a French festival that exclusively shows mountain related films.

Mountain life – the artists

Tuesday, November 16th, 2010

The alpine village of Morzine is home to many sculptors, artists and photographers. Morzine also hosts a surprising number of cultural and arts events.

At the end of October Morzine hosted their annual Alpine Flavours event (or Fete du Cochon as the locals call it). On the 30th & 31st October the Savoyard culture and traditions were celebrated over the course of the weekend. Morzine village told the story of the people whose livelihood is the land and the animals. Local food products were available to taste. Local music was played. It was also an educational event in that the organisers wanted to teach people how to taste and distinguish between the local foods, to understand the agro-pastoral practices and to respect the traditions and local environment.

The local restaurant ‘La Chamade’ organise these events each year. But their involvement with local artists and local culture is not merely an annual affair. The restaurant itself offers a large room dedicated to art and offers its services for art exhibitions and openings. Each month a different local artist exhibits their work in La Chamade and its neighbour Le Coup de Coeur.

The village of Morzine, which is part of the Portes du Soleil ski area, has developed into so much more than a ski resort. It has a year long international community made up of artists and creatives, business people and entrepreneurs, as well as mountain-lovers and sportsmen. Green is the new Black. How the ski resort of Morzine is doing its bit for the environment

Wednesday, October 20th, 2010

In conjunction with Much Better Adventures, an independent adventure resource that promotes sustainable practices within the snowsports community, and Make Snowsports Greener, a foundation concerned with helping companies, such as chalet companies, do everything they can to minimise the environmental impact of their business and reduce their carbon emissions, the ski resort of Morzine has embarked upon a new sustainable ski project to protect the environment.

With over 30 chalet companies already signed up, the new initiative aims to help the companies reduce their water and energy consumption during the 2010-2011 ski season.

Much Better Adventures will be working closely with chalet and hotel owners showing them how small changes (such as using low flow showerheads, checking for leaks regularly and using energy efficient light bulbs), can make a positive difference to the environment. They will be running training workshops at the start of the winter season to ensure that all staff understand the issues and to highlight best practice examples that they can use in their daily operations.

All the chalet companies involved rely on the snow for their business. So if everyone takes a moment to think about how they go about the daily running of their business, and reduce their energy and water consumption, the cumulative positive effect on the environment will be huge. There are so many ways for everyone to make a difference. Several airlines give you the option of paying an extra £1.50 per flight to offset your carbon footprint and there are new companies such as Snow Carbon offering train journeys into the Alps avoiding flights.

We all enjoy the French Alps and many of us have second homes there so to protect them now means we can all enjoy them for a long time to come.

Mont Blanc rally – Morzine
Saturday, September 2-4

Friday, September 17th, 2010

The Mont Blanc Rally arrives in Morzine at the beginning of September. For the last 20 years rally drivers have raced around the resort of Morzine-Avoriaz in one of the finest mountain rallies around. The Morzine stage exists as the fifth stage of the French National Rally Championships and so many of France’s top drivers are in town to compete.

Over the course of the Rally weekend Morzine residents will be able to see many high performance cars parked all around town.  The event is also twinned with a classic car rally as well.

The race itself takes place over two days during which drivers will cover over 600km around the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest connected ski areas in the world and home to some of Alpine Angels most desirable properties! The Morzine to Avoriaz road is used as one of the rally’s “Special Stages” where the road is completely closed. The cars are then timed as they hurtle up the narrow mountain roads. It’s not a sight one sees everyday, and is yet another one of the incredible events that come to Morzine during the summer months. Pass’Portes du Soleil 26th-27th June 2010

Monday, June 21st, 2010

On the 26th and 27th June, over 3000 mountain bikers will celebrate the start of their sport season. They will congregate in resorts all across the Portes du Soleil and cycle a 75 kilometer circuit using 13 different lifts and crossing terrain from 1000 meters to 2250 meters in altitude. The route takes the mountain bikers through some truly spectacular mountain scenery in both France and Switzerland.

Seven different stations open and the resorts have all been working hard to ensure the beautiful paths and tracks in the area are all ready. There are also supply points along the trail where riders can stop off for a well earned break and even taste regional produce from each of the villages that they pass through.

A kids trek has also been arranged for young mountain bikers aged between 9 – 14 years with their own specially designed circuit and with their own kid friendly refreshment points.

Year on year this event receives rave reviews. It’s definitely worth popping along to if you haven’t already registered to ride.
