Mont Blanc rally – Morzine
Saturday, September 2-4

Friday, September 17th, 2010

The Mont Blanc Rally arrives in Morzine at the beginning of September. For the last 20 years rally drivers have raced around the resort of Morzine-Avoriaz in one of the finest mountain rallies around. The Morzine stage exists as the fifth stage of the French National Rally Championships and so many of France’s top drivers are in town to compete.

Over the course of the Rally weekend Morzine residents will be able to see many high performance cars parked all around town.  The event is also twinned with a classic car rally as well.

The race itself takes place over two days during which drivers will cover over 600km around the Portes du Soleil, one of the largest connected ski areas in the world and home to some of Alpine Angels most desirable properties! The Morzine to Avoriaz road is used as one of the rally’s “Special Stages” where the road is completely closed. The cars are then timed as they hurtle up the narrow mountain roads. It’s not a sight one sees everyday, and is yet another one of the incredible events that come to Morzine during the summer months. The World of Morz’na 28th – 30th July

Wednesday, July 28th, 2010

Morzine is playing host to something that has never been seen before. A festival where imagination becomes reality. The World of Morz’na is a magical festival focused on all things elfish, fairy-eaque and well… just plain magical. From 28th – 30th July you will find small huts appears in the centre of Morzine where children are invited to visit magic workshops, makeup artists, wood carvers, musicians and jugglers. Storytellers will tell of Elvish legend; Jugglers and acrobats, horses, ponies and unicorns will mingle with stone carvers musicians. I believe there will even be magical tours in the forest and an enchanted assault course for the little ones to navigate.

Pass’Portes du Soleil 26th-27th June 2010

Monday, June 21st, 2010

On the 26th and 27th June, over 3000 mountain bikers will celebrate the start of their sport season. They will congregate in resorts all across the Portes du Soleil and cycle a 75 kilometer circuit using 13 different lifts and crossing terrain from 1000 meters to 2250 meters in altitude. The route takes the mountain bikers through some truly spectacular mountain scenery in both France and Switzerland.

Seven different stations open and the resorts have all been working hard to ensure the beautiful paths and tracks in the area are all ready. There are also supply points along the trail where riders can stop off for a well earned break and even taste regional produce from each of the villages that they pass through.

A kids trek has also been arranged for young mountain bikers aged between 9 – 14 years with their own specially designed circuit and with their own kid friendly refreshment points.

Year on year this event receives rave reviews. It’s definitely worth popping along to if you haven’t already registered to ride.

New Indoor Swimming Pool in Morzine

Saturday, May 22nd, 2010

Work will shortly commence on the construction of Morzine’s new indoor swimming pool.  Currently if you want to swim during the winter months or inter-season you have to drive for around 40 minutes to find a public indoor swimming pool of any decent size. The new pool will be positioned alongside the outdoor swimming pool and will be 25m long and 15m wide.  A well-being centre is also being constructed with 3 saunas and 2 hammams (turkish baths) as well as a small relaxing area.  A new restaurant will also be built with seating for up to 100 diners. The opening of the new centre is planned for the winter of 2011. In the meantime you can still use the Olympic sized outdoor heated swimming pool which is located next to the Palais des Sports and is open throughout the summer. Entry is about €5 for a day pass. There are also 10 outdoor hard and clay tennis courts which can be booked on an hourly basis. The courts are only open during the summer months from 8am until 8pm.

“Olympic Day” – Morzine – 22nd February

Thursday, February 18th, 2010

Morzine is incredibly proud of Jean Vuarnet. The 22nd February is the 50th anniversary of Jean Vuarnet’s Olympic Games victory. To mark the event Morzine is unveiling a statue of their hero 50 years after the Morzinois skier won the gold medal in downhill at the Squaw Valley Winter Games. There will be a live video link-up to Morzine’s current Olympians who are participating in the 2010 Olympic Games in Vancouver. This will be followed by a huge party in support of the Annecy 2018 Games bid. It is going to be great fun as the town is fiercely proud of its sportsmen and sportswomen. The night will end with a beautiful torchlit descent into the centre of the village, entertainment from local schoolchildren, free mulled wine and sweets! A truly local and somewhat historic event.

Venue: Tourist Office square.

Abondance – Frozen Kisses Week 8th – 14th February

Thursday, February 4th, 2010

I know very little about this event except that it involves kisses, love and romance. Abondance Tourist Office describes it as a

“frozen week of kisses during which the soft perfume of love will float over the resort”

Apparently there are writing competitions, St Valentine Day entertainments, and ‘little lovers platters’ in restaurants…….

Morzine – White Week Film Festival 1st– 5th February

Tuesday, February 2nd, 2010

Morzine – White Week Film Festival 1st– 5th February

During this week Morzine celebrates all that is great about winter in the mountains. I could think of a thousand things. They have narrowed it down to just a few. Mountain patrollers will be demonstrating ARVA avalanche rescue transceivers, there will be the chance to try snowshoeing and ski joering  but the most interesting of all, to me, is that each evening there will be free screenings of celebrated films about the mountains and winter sports from 6pm onwards in the sports hall. Now that is worth celebrating.
